Thoughts That Influence My Life!

Categories: Pastor's Blog

Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.

Proverbs 4:23 (Good News Translation)

Over the last several weeks we have been studying the greatest sermon that Jesus preached. He was explaining to them what the life of a disciple will look like. He began his ministry with this sermon because he believed that our thoughts influence our lives.

For instance —

My thought life and the manner that I interpret things influences my situation — It’s not what happens to me that matters as much as how I choose to see it and   respond to it.  Many years ago I heard this statement: “The way I react will determine whether the circumstance makes me better or bitter.”  When I encounter unexpected       situations do I grow from them or allow them to become a stumbling block?

My beliefs influence my behavior — We always act according to our beliefs, even when those ideas are false. Let me give you an example.  When you were a child, if you    believed a shadow in your bedroom at night was a monster, your body reacted in fear (adrenaline and jitters) even though it wasn’t true. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you are operating on true information! Your convictions about yourself, about life, and about God influence your conduct.

The way that I talk to myself influences my self-esteem – We constantly talk to ourselves. Do you run yourself down with your self-talk? Stop doing that: “As he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7 NKJV).

The Sermon on the Mount was shaping the thoughts of the disciples and shaping the way that they would respond as they followed Jesus and later gave direction to the new church.

What changes in your thought life will enable you to move closer to Jesus?

I am looking forward to seeing you this Sunday.
